More clover and herbs in silage call for a different approach to preservation

Extreme weather conditions are changing grassland. Dairy farmers are increasingly choosing mixtures containing more clover and herbs, particularly on dry soils, but also in response to drier weather and fewer opportunities to apply fertiliser. These crops are more drought-tolerant and provide additional protein. However, these new mixtures also create new challenges when making silage.

Lacteolus: a targeted approach to Clostridia!

VisscherHolland introduces Lacteolus, an innovative silage protectant that stands out through its combined approach to fermentation management and microbial control. The product addresses the growing challenges posed by Clostridia and mould contamination in forage, offering a targeted solution for preserving feed value and animal health.

Carefree dry period

A good dry period requires a careful approach. The dry period brings a change of ration and is also a time of major hormonal change. A good dry period is crucial for the life of both cow and calf. It lays the foundations for the next lactation and the potential of the unborn calf.

How does the fermentation process work in the silo?

During ensyling, remove as much oxygen from the silo as possible. This can be achieved with a dry matter percentage of around thirty to fourty percent and sufficient weight.

Is your grassland in good condition?

Following the winter period, it is important to examine the condition of your grassland. After all, good sward quality is the foundation of good forage. What is the proportion of undesirable grass varieties in the sward? Does the grassland contain a high proportion of weeds? These factors can determine the yield of an entire year. The difference between desirable and undesirable grasses can easily amount to 100 FUM (feed unit milk)/kg of dry matter.

NDF digestibility

Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility is an important component of the feed intake and how feed is utilised. Digesting the fibres ensures the proteins and sugars contained in the cell walls are released into the rumen to be converted into microbial protein.

Maize harvest

Every year, the maize harvest is an important moment to process the high-quality crop into roughage. The entire process, from harvesting to the covering of the maize silage, must be properly attuned.

Grass silage

Making grass silage is a method of preserving forage. It is a preserving method, just like pickling, freezing, drying, salting or canning. The process of silaging is based on creating anaerobic conditions and sufficient acidity. Harmful micro-organisms like mould have little chance of developing in anaerobic conditions and acidification stops the decomposition process. This enables long term storage of the grass without compromising on the quality.

Digestion by the cow

The compartments in the ruminant stomach and intestines combine to create a large factory that breaks down (digests) feed into substances that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. The entrance to this factory is the cow’s muzzle where the chewing movement grinds the plant material and moistens it with saliva. Waste and undigested feed components are excreted by the cow via the manure.
